as a child through the 4-H club in Ouachita Parish, Louisiana, and shares her
love of entomology and education by directing the UF Entomology Education and
Outreach Program (The Bug Club), by mentoring and advising students, by
volunteering for the Entomological Foundation, and by teaching general
education and introductory entomology courses to undergraduates. Her research
program focuses on entomology education and integrated pest management tools
for crawling insect control. Outside of the classroom, Rebecca provides CEU and
recertification training for educators, pest control operators, and mosquito
managers, as well as for pest management associations. Rebecca is a
Board-Certified Entomologist, serves on the ESA Education and Outreach Committee,

She received her B.S. in biological sciences and a minor in molecular biology
from Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos, Peru. Her professional
experience, as well as her passion in the world of plants, began when she
joined the International Potato Center (CIP) in Lima to perform her
undergraduate thesis. Based on this experience, Lina joined Louisiana State
University (LSU) to pursue her M.S. in agronomy and crop sciences. Currently,
she is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Entomology at LSU under the
supervision of Dr. Michael Stout. Her research interests include plant-insect
and plant-pathogen interactions as well as host plant resistance. Her project
involves investigations of the mechanistic basis of plant resistance against
above-ground and below-ground organisms in rice. Primarily, she studies the
effects of mycorrhizal fungi, a symbiotic soil-borne organism, on rice
resistance to insect herbivores. The ultimate goal of Lina’s research is to
provide a better understanding of plant-insect-mycorrhizae interactions in rice
pests of Louisiana, which will help to develop more effective pest management
programs in rice. Lina has been actively involved in the Entomological Society
of America since 2013. She has presented her research at several national and
Southeastern Branch meetings. She also enjoys conducting educational outreach
about insects to kids with the Entomology Club at LSU.

In
mid-February, the Entomological Society of America welcomed its newest staff
member, Willet Hossfeld, certifications program manager. Willet will play a
lead role in the facilitation and growth of the ESA Board Certified
Entomologist and Associate Certified Entomologist programs, so he’s a person
that current and future BCEs and ACEs should get to know. Learn more about
Willet in the Q&A below.

Where are you coming to ESA
from?

Prior
to joining ESA, I was with the National Association of Home Builders, where I
worked on growing the federation’s membership, before which I was with the
Consumer Technology Association, where I oversaw the SmartHome and Vehicle
Technology divisions and worked on educational and promotional campaigns. I’ve
worked in the nonprofit and association sector for about four years now and
have grown to appreciate all the effort and resources that volunteers put back
into their industries.

How will your association

While
at the Consumer Technology Association, I oversaw the Mobile Electronics
Certified Professionals (MECP) Program, and I have experience in overseeing maintenance-of-certification
programs with medical specialty societies. Through this work, I gained an
appreciation for the importance of certification: both to differentiate oneself
from the competition and peers, as well as demonstrate to clients a dedication
to providing the best service possible. I look forward to taking these previous
experiences and working to build on the success of both programs. I am very
excited about the potential for ACE’s and BCE’s growth.

I
grew up in a very much DIY house—the thought being that you could trust your
own work better than that of someone who wasn’t inherently invested in the job.
When my wife and I bought our house, though, there were a number of jobs that
needed to be addressed before we could move in that were well outside of the
scope of my capabilities. We wanted to ensure that things were done right.
Since I had worked with a voluntary certification program (MECP), I knew that
people who seek those certifications do so to gain a deeper knowledge of their
field and understand the root cause of an issue, rather than just the surface.
The contractors that we used for HVAC repair, mold remediation, and more all
had additional certifications in their field, something that I sought out. They
all took the time not just to tell me what was going to be fixed and how much
it would cost but also to explain what was causing the issue, how to prevent it
from reoccurring in the future, and why they chose the course of action that
they did. Giving me that extra information allowed me to investigate and
understand better. The extra step that these contractors provided gave me peace
of mind that they were indeed invested in providing the best service
possible.

learned so much from that. I have
also been reading back-issues of the various entomology journals and Googling
everything I can to learn more about insects and their role in our environment.
When it comes to pest management, I am trying to organize a ride along with one
our ACE certified PMPs to understand the day-to-day of the job. I think this
will be a great opportunity to get a strong understanding of how being an ACE
helps PMPs do their job better.

experience. The tour at the Smithsonian was amazing. Seeing all of the work
that goes into maintaining their collection of 35 million verified specimens

and I am eager to learn more about the field of entomology and learn more about
what our members do.

I
always have a hard time with these kinds of questions; I always feel a little
uncomfortable talking about myself. I’ve travelled extensively throughout South
America and am relatively fluent in Spanish, and I can speak a little bit of
Brazilian Portuguese. In 2007, I co-organized a nonprofit to educate people on
alternative fuel vehicles. A few friends and I converted a 1959 Mercedes Diesel
to run on waste vegetable oil and competed in La Carrera Pan Americana, a
vintage car race through Mexico. Our plan had been to collect waste oil from
local restaurants and hotels to fuel the car and compete (very slowly) in the
race. Unfortunately, our support truck broke down and we were not able to
finish. One day, we hope to return and complete the race, proving the viability
of waste oil as a fuel. When I’m not at work, I enjoy cooking, sailing, and
spending as much time outside as possible.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that there were 74,100 pest control workers in 2014 (link). This seems low to me, based on some analysis of the PCT Top 100 list.

The 2016 list (which recorded 2015 sales) showed total revenue of $6.3 billion for the top 100 North American firms. The list also includes numbers of employees. Nearly a quarter (24) of those on the list did not list employee counts. However, using annual revenue divided by employee counts, we find that the average employee = $111,273 in revenue. NOTE: this does not mean that if you hire someone new you'll earn another $111,273, I only use this as a means to estimate the number of employees for those firms that don't list it on the PCT list. For example, if a firm lists sales of $49,000,000 (Company 17 on the list) and we know that the average revenue per employee is $111,273, then we can estimate that Company 17 employs 440 people. This is imperfect, but serves as a useful tool nonetheless.

Using this formula, we see that in 2015 that there approximately 57,098 individuals employed by the top 100 firms, or about 77% of the total in the full marketplace, according to BLS. By some estimates, the U.S. business sector for pest control operations includes about 20,000 firms. So even if every other firm not on the PCT list was a single owner-operator (which we KNOW) is not true, then the BLS number is off by over 2,500 people.

I know we're basing this on some estimates, so it's possible that my analysis (below) could be flawed, but this should highlight that we need more data.

Is it time for a new and complete pest control marketplace survey?
And though we reported on the "state of the certification programs" during the Business Meeting a few weeks ago, I wanted to give everyone a sense of how we finished the year in terms of ACE and BCE certified individuals.

Let's review the BCE program first. I'm pleased to report that we had another solid year of growth - ending the year with 472 BCEs, a full 20 more than we had on the books at the end of 2015 (growth of 4%). Of those, 385 were full BCEs, 10 were Interns, 77 were Emeritus. BCE has grown annually since 2012.

We recorded 118 more ACEs than we had when 2015 closed out, finishing the year at 1,018. That is a growth rate of 13%! On average, since the program was introduced in 2004, the program has grown every year at an average growth rate of 46% (full disclosure - some of those early years had huge percentage increases, but were less stellar in terms of overall numbers - 2004 had 14 ACEs and 2005 had 45 ACEs, a 165% jump). But, of note, ACE has grown every year.

Included in the numbers above for ACE are 14 ACE-International individuals. ACE-I was introduced in October 2014, but we did not have our first applicant pass until February 2015. We finished 2015 with a total of 5 ACE-I's and our 2016 total of 14 is thus 9 more than the year before, or a jump of about 180% (see what I mean about percentage increases!).

Also of interest, we had 10 people who hold both the ACE and BCE!

We hope that you continue to maintain your ACE and BCE. These certification programs help to build the professionalism of the industry and showcase our professionalism for the world.

Wear your ACE and BCE logos with pride! If you need a copy of the logo for your website, business cards, or email signature, please contact ace@entsoc.org or bce@entsoc.org.

As we posted on this blog last year for the 2015 Business Meeting, the annual meeting switched from a live meeting held in conjunction with the ESA Annual Meeting to this format in an effort to boost its reach, attendance, and staying power (by virtue of a recorded webinar).

We had 56 people register for the webinar and 31 who actually attended it. While this is a slight decrease from last year's 37 attendees, it remains a strong improvement over previous in-person meetings.

Dr. Zia Siddiqi, BCE (2017 Chair of the Certification Board (CB)) presided over the meeting with additional commentary provided by Forrest St. Aubin, BCE-Emeritus (2016 Chair of the CB).

The webinar is live on the ESA YouTube channel and can also be accessed by clicking on the video below. Selected questions that were submitted to the webinar that we were unable to answer during the session are also addressed below the video.

Questions and comments submitted during the webinar that were not addressed during the live event:

Question: Is there an ACE award application online? If so, where do I find it?
The ACE Award site is on the ESA Awards site. It can be found here: www.entsoc.org/awards/ace-professional-award.

Question: Will hiring a new certification manager affect our relationship with Chris Stelzig?
Yes, but only to the extent that the new manager will take over the daily operations of the program. Stelzig will continue to manage the program and oversee all activities, including attending some meetings, but the new manager will soon become a familiar face at many pest management conferences and meetings in the United States and around the world.

Question: RE nominating persons for an ACE Award -- It might be a good idea to involve the editorial staffs of Pest Control Technology (PCT) Magazine and PMP magazine, as well as appropriate NPMA faculty/staff members, to help promote the choice and submittal of ACE-credentialed co-worker and colleague names within the structural pest management industry.
Agreed! In the past we have used our social media platforms, our industry partners (like NPMA) and ESA's regular communication vehicles like eNews to distribute announcements. All ACEs and BCEs are encouraged to watch their inboxes for the awards announcements and distribute to their networks.

Question: Maybe ESA can explore a special registration option for ACE professionals who would like to attend Annual Meeting or Branch Meetings for continuing education without being ESA members.
Actually, ACEs already enjoy a discounted rate to attend the ESA Annual Meeting. It is not quite as steep of a discount as ESA members enjoy, but ... hey, it's an ESA membership meeting, what do you expect?

Question: I suggest that serious consideration be given to having webinars in specific areas that could also serve as educational resources for ACE and BCE. There are a lot of members who are academics and may have good material that could be presented online.
Thank you for the suggestion. We have investigated this option in the past and would still consider it for future expansion and resources that we can offer to applicants.ACE-BCE Entomologisthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10310383928497451324noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8661512685197868778.post-44379323925276063902016-11-22T08:25:00.002-08:002016-11-22T08:25:50.706-08:00New ACEs and BCEs - including our 1,000th ACEThe ACE program crossed a milestone this month when the 1,000th person for the year earned his ACE. This is not the 1,000th person to ever earn the ACE, but the Rudy Ayala pushed our overall count of ACEs over 1,000 for the first time when he passed his exam on November 16 (the event was covered in the EntomologyToday blog).

ESA's Chris Stelzig meeting with attendees at
PestWorld East on August 29 in Panjim, Goa, India

I'd never been to India before, so was not sure what to expect from my first trip which was to attend PestWorld East at the Grand Hyatt in Goa, India on 27-29 August 2016. This meeting was a joint production of the Indian Pest Control Association and the NPMA.

To say that I was impressed is an understatement.

From the impressive array of speakers, cultural programming, delicious food, interesting tour opportunities, and the high level of the attendees at the conference, this trip was a win by any standards.

The IPCA had an incredible attendance of about 525 (last count I heard) interested, attentive, professional, and dedicated PMPs. I honestly don't think I've ever attended a pest management conference where the audience in the training sessions paid attention like this group did. The speakers included (too many to list them all) included many ESA members, such as Chow-Yang Lee (BCE), Jim Fredericks (BCE), Su Yee Lim (BCE), Faith Oi, and Dini Miller. Jim and I contributed to a session on professionalism in pest management and credentialing possibilities that exist -- including ACE, ACE-I, and BCE. There are currently no ACEs in India, but that won't last for long. Especially with talented and dedicated BCEs like Jayant Dandawate and Ruparao T. Gahukar to serve as proctors.

I had the privilege to spend some time with Anil Rao, owner of PCI and some members of his professional team and family. PCI is the largest pest management firm in the nation and it shows in the quality that they bring to their work. They take a science-based approach to pest management, even operating a laboratory in-house for product research and development.

ESA ran an exhibit booth that frequently had attendees lined up to visit. I quickly ran out of business cards and made nearly five times as many contacts as I would normally make at a professional conference like this. Next time I'll pack more cards!

The takeaway for me is this -- India is a country where the pest management industry is in great shape and is growing rapidly in professionalism. I look forward to having an opportunity to return.

An underutilized way to help control vector-borne diseases is to manage the vectors.

Aedes aegypti:
You may or may not do mosquito work, but you probably get mosquito questions from your customers. Many people tend to group all insects as pests and -- since you are who they think of for pest control -- you are apt to get the questions. Yet mosquito work remains a very small part of most PMPs overall business mix. In a supplement to the magazine, PCT reported that while nearly half of all pest management firms do mosquito work, for 45% of them the total revenue earned is under $5,000.

So it pays to learn a little bit about this insect that is known as the world's most dangerous animal. Mosquito management has been in the news a lot recently, particularly controlling the Ae. ae. mosquito, which is known to carry dengue, chikungunya, yellow fever, and the Zika virus.
Too often the topic focuses on disease management and prevention. While this is an important aspect of the discussion, it does put us in a position of chasing symptoms. It is imperative that vector control becomes an increasingly large part of the search for solutions. In March 2016, ESA co-hosted a summit on controlling the Ae. ae. mosquito in the Americas. In the outcome statement, the attendees call for three actions that will help to turn the tide against the mosquito:

Ensuring that those most affected by the mosquito receive accurate scientific knowledge on ways that they can help to control the insect.

Funding the research needed to develop better tools and techniques for vector control.

The vector control community must organize and speak in a unified way for us to speak locally and globally on the critical importance of vector control research and implementation.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has a ton of great resources on their site about ticks, tick-borne disease, prevention, and --of course-- Lyme disease. (Side note: It is properly called Lyme disease, not "Lyme's disease" and it is named after the town in Connecticut (you guessed it -- Lyme, Connecticut) where the disease was first described in the 1970's). Research shows that Lyme is spreading southward. The blacklegged tick (Ixodes scapularis), which is responsible for most cases of the disease, is now found in almost half of all counties in the United States. And while research has been promising for learning more about the tick, we still have a long ways to go. For now, prevention remains the number 1 tool for reducing Lyme. For more information on the latest research, see this link from EntomologyToday that discusses an Integrated Tick Management Symposium held by ESA, CDC, and the IPM Institute (May 2016).ACE-BCE Entomologisthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10310383928497451324noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8661512685197868778.post-30577167154105225442016-05-19T06:32:00.004-07:002016-05-19T06:32:44.158-07:00Please join ESA in congratulating these pest management professionals who recently obtained their ACE or BCE.
An Evaluation of Butterfly Gardens for Restoring Habitat for the Monarch Butterfly (Lepidoptera: Danaidae)

Authors: Brian T. Cutting, Douglas W. Tallamy

Source: Environmental Entomology, Volume 44 #5

Abstract: The eastern migratory monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus L.) population in North America hit record low numbers during the 2013–2014 overwintering season, prompting pleas by scientists and conservation groups to plant the butterfly’s milkweed host plants (Asclepias spp.) in residential areas. While planting butterfly gardens with host plants seems like an intuitive action, no previous study has directly compared.... Source: Environmental Entomology, Volume 44 #5

Abstract: Purposeful attraction and aggregation of adult Coccinellidae at target sites would be useful for sampling purposes and pest suppression. We field-tested 1) lures in yellow and black pyramidal traps and 2) pyramidal traps that had been painted one or two colors (without lures) to determine if lures or trap color affected capture of adult Coccinellidae. In only one experiment with lures did a single rate of limonene increase trap capture, whereas no other... Induced Effects on Red Imported Fire Ant (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) Forager Size Ratios by Pseudacteon spp. (Diptera: Phoridae): Implications on Bait Size Selection

Authors: J. J. Reed, R. T. Puckett, R. E. Gold

Source: Environmental Entomology, Volume 44 #5

Abstract: Red imported fire ants, Solenopsis invicta Buren, are adversely affected by phorid flies in the genus Pseudacteon by instigating defensive behaviors in their hosts, and in turn reducing the efficiency of S. invicta foraging. Multiple Pseudacteon species have been released in Texas, and research has been focused on the establishment and spread of these introduced biological control agents....

Abstract: There is increasing evidence that exposure to neonicotinoid insecticides at sublethal levels impairs colonies of honeybees and other pollinators. Recently, it was found that sublethal contamination with neonicotinoids also affect growth and behavior of ants. In this study, we exposed red imported fire ants, Solenopsis invicta Buren, to sublethal dosages of dietary imidacloprid and investigated its effect on ant feeding, digging, and foraging behavior... Abstract: Aedes aegypti (L.) (Diptera: Culicidae) is the key vector of three important arboviral diseases: dengue, yellow fever, and chikungunya. Immature stages of this species inhabit human-made containers placed in residential landscapes. In this study, we evaluated a few compounds in a sensitive behavioral assay with Ae. aegypti larvae. The orientation of larvae to different compounds was surveyed using a performance index.... Abstract: Reducing the number of host-vector interactions is an effective way to reduce the spread of vector-borne diseases. Repellents are widely used to protect humans from a variety of protozoans, viruses, and nematodes. DEET (N,N-Diethyl-meta-toluamide), a safe and effective repellent, was developed during World War II. Fear of possible side effects of DEET has created a large market for “natural” DEET-free repellents... Abstract: Apis mellifera L. is the main pollinator of cultivated plants. With the increased emphasis on organic agriculture, the use of botanical insecticides has also increased. However, the effects of these products on bees remain to be determined. In this study, we aimed at assessing the acute toxicity and sublethal behavioral effects of botanical insecticides such as andiroba oil, citronella oil, eucalyptus oil, garlic extract, neem oil, and rotenone on honey bees, A. mellifera...
A certification program like BCE (or ACE) should accurately reflect the work that professionals do. Simple, right? That is until you get into a complex field like entomology. The Board Certified Entomologist (BCE) program is designed for all degreed-entomologists whether they are working in crops, forensics, structural control, a laboratory, or elsewhere. The BCE Core Exam has to be applicable to every entomologist.

A team of volunteers has developed a new outline for the Core Exam and we want to validate it against what YOU do. If you are working as an entomologist, whether or not you are currently certified by ESA, please take our Job Task Analysis survey.

We'll pull two completed random responses by the deadline of January 19th and award two $50 American Express gift cards.
